I haven’t seen anything in the paper but WRVA has reported various sightings in the past 1-2 months. People swear it is a LION, not a cougar. They are speculating that either it is a mountain lion/bobcat that people mistakenly believe is a lion, or a pet lion that has escaped. ANOTHER reason not to let your kids play in Richmond.

[probably photoshopped, but this story has legs]
Authorities get reports of lion roaming Bon Air

A report of a large animal resembling a lion being sighted off Huguenot Road in South Richmond this week has turned up no evidence of lions lurking in that area.
Elaine Severson was walking with a friend in a neighborhood west of Stony Point Shopping Center about 6 a.m. on Tuesday when she saw a large, tan animal, estimated to weigh 250 pounds, crouching on the street facing them, she said.
“I was kind of in disbelief because we’ve seen a lot of coyotes and bobcats and we see deer almost every day,” Severson said. “But when we saw the massive size of the body, we both went into a ‘let’s get out of here’ mode.”
