Now that he is elected, will Obama govern as the extreme left-wing radical that those of us on the right believe him to be, or will he govern from the middle-left, as Bill Clinton did, and as many of his supporters believe that he will? I didn’t have such a visceral fear of Clinton’s policy. In the end, he governed by polls: he took polls, and then got out in front of public opinion. (With a few notable exceptions, such as “Don’t ask, don’t tell” [at leat my recollection is that he was ahead of public opinion on that innovation] and “Hillary Care.”) He could never get in too much trouble staying within the mainstream opinion of Americans.
