Who is in charge? The People, or the government?

Headlines on Drudge about the Brits threatening to “censor web or we will “legislate to protect the children” and “Chavez defends plan for internet regulations” and “Dems play politics with ‘net neutrality’ vote” got me steaming. Who the fuck do those in the government think that they are? The government did not invent the internet, it does not own the internet, it does not have a fucking thing to do with the internet. And yet, those officious bastards are dying to get their hands on the net, to control it, to tax it, and to grab the power that it controls.

Then, my heart was warmed by reading this article.  An entire jury pool stated that they would refuse to convict a defendant for possession of a meer 1/16th of an ounce of pot. The government is in charge of making laws, of arresting and prosecuting and sentencing those who break the laws, but We, The People, still have a say in the matter.

Gawd, I love America. We have guns, freedom of speech, and we have the means to shoot whoever tries to pull a Hitler Chavez dictatorship coup.  And liberals/progressives are still in the minority! Isn’t life great!!!?

p.s.  No, I don’t smoke pot.  But I think it should be legalized. End Prohibition.  And I think that the federal government’s involvement is unconstitutional.  See my previous post here for a fuller explanation of my views.

  1. Our previous Liberal* government in Canberra under John Howard made some moves toward internet censorship, but realised that ultimately any attempt to control it would be easily subverted.
Our current Labor** government in Canberra thinks it can do anything if it throws enough money around. Their plans for an internet filter have fallen out of the spotlight recently however. Sensible citizens of the Great South Land are getting very PO’d about their grand scam, er, scheme for a National Broadband Network. From a cost of 7 bil A$ in 2007 to 30 bil in 2009, currently the cost is estimated at 43 bil.

    * and ** When you cross the Equator, political tags and definitions are tipped upside down. Big-l ‘Liberal’ is the conservative right of centre party, although it does attract a few left of centre personages too. Likewise with the Labor party, which no longer represents the working classes but instead acts as a magnet for middle class Mao-loving Che-wearing lefties. The sort who berate the capitalist system but somehow find comfortable places within it – usually within academia or the public service; also, curiously, their animus never impels them to apply for permanent residence in North Korea. I daresay the type is familiar to you over there, too.
All the best to you and yours and Smashmouthers everywhere, John. Let the Christmas cheer abound!

  2. J. D…

    Without a doubt, yer a barrister, who’s hand I’d like to shake…

I’ve always luved and made a special project of exploiting a man’s [or soldier’s] foolishness…in my lifetime.
That’s one thing I’ve dabbled in and have honed to a fine art, by my ownself…

Your sir, are also and truly a primary, premier example of such an outlandish, exceptional, character with absolutely, no bonifide’s, of worth, what so ever…except yer cunning!

With your “art for words” and my “art for adventure” perhaps we could collaborate on a totally outrageous, best seller…

    All the “very best”…
    From yer “yank side”…!

  5. Thanks, Gentlemen. Same to ya. Gramps, we never agree about politics, but I’d trust you with my life in a foxhole. I’d say that’s more important than agreement.

  6. I thought the story of that ‘dance’ was just a rumour… but hell, I’m just a civilian.

  7. ggn06…
    It is not a rumor…

Some of those who have won the dance… have horribly burnt and scared, anal sphincters, as witness to their manly prowess or consummate foolishness; depending upon, one’s point of view…?

Happy Holidays to all the olde winners, I know how you feel…

  8. Flaming arseholes: how appropriate that Gramps is talking about them. 😉

just kiddin, Gramps. Merry Christmas my friend.
