Whom do you most admire on the opposite side of the political spectrum from you?

No fair if you are Pub just picking the most conservative Democrat, or vice versa.

I admire Bill Clinton. He is apparently a genius, with generally marvelous political instincts. He was not afraid to take advice from a Republican.  His triangulation strategy, while not true leadership, was pretty damn smart, and much more popular than the idiocy of the Obama Administration’s socialist policies. (Okay, Bubba was an idiot when it came to international issues.)

Another choice that might shock my regular readers, I admire The Ragin’ Cajun, James Carville.  If I was in a political fight for my life I’d want him in my foxhole. While most of the policies that he supports are idiotic, I believe that  he truly desires to do what is best for the little guy.  He does not look at policy to see what is best for the fat cats, but how it will affect the common man. Sadly, he doesn’t see that what seems to be a good thing for the little guy (like raising the minimum wage, increasing taxes on corporations, easy unlimited unemployment benefits, etc.) usually is counter-productive to the little guy.  He is not a knee-jerk liberal who blindly accepts liberal dogma, and is not afraid to be honest.  Besides all that, he has marvelous choice when it comes to women.  I think he and I could easily become drinking buddies.

Believe it or not, I admire Jon Stewart.  Smart, very quick on his feet, if he were interviewing me I’d think of a brilliant retort to one of his asinine positions, oh, about ten minutes too late.  He is a genius in setting up straw men arguments for conservative positions and then shooting them full of holes.  I wish we had someone exactly like him on our side.

Am I missing anyone?  And any liberals such as Gramps want to share any conservatives that they admire?

  1. Jim Webb would be a cop-out, because I suppose he’s a conservative Democrat, but I admire any “liberal” who carries a gun. When I started thinking about it I was shocked about how few Democrats in Congress I admire these days. There used to be more, most are gone now. I am with you on Carville because I just love the guy’s attitude, despite profound disagreements on policy. I just can’t admire either Clinton, he for utter shameless lying, she for staying with the adulterer in pursuit of power.

I do admire Joe Biden for being able to utter the most fantastical bullshit and somehow skate away. Yet, I have a sneaking liking for him. How does he do that?

Some people just "got it like that".

  3. Christopher Hitchens because, despite the utter stupidity of his views on religion, he, like Orwell, often sees the faults with his own side.

Mark Lamont Hill: Makes pointed jokes about his own side and sees the faults.
