What the Hell is a “Neo-Victorian”?

Having been given the honor and privilege of contributing here after responding to John Doe’s “Bloggers Wanted,” one must eventually post something.  Since “Gramps” the Old Soldier doesn’t seem to have read Neal Stephenson’s novel The Diamond Age (and neither, perhaps, have you) let me give you the thumbnail, and relate it to what’s going on here at Smash Mouth Politics.

In the future depicted in the book, nation-states have basically been replaced by “phyles,” associations of individuals that one is born into, or joins voluntarily, and that know no real geographical boundaries.  Something of a “virtual country,” they provide protection, aid, economic association and so on.  The Neo-Victorians are perhaps the most successful of the phyles.  Why?  Because they have high standards.  They work hard, stay married, stay sober and dress for dinner.

At the root of their philosophy is a simple statement made by their “CEO”:  Some things really are better than others. People, cultures, governments, societies, religions.

This is diametrically opposed to the notions of Radical Equality at the root of the Social Welfare Liberalism of most European governments and the Obama/Reid/Pelosi Axis here in the USA.  Some things really are better than others. The implications that flow from this simple premise are global.  Work is better than welfare.  Industry is better than sloth.  The United States is better than Zimbabwe.  The moral and intelligent make better friends than the vicious and stupid.

While this may seem the merest commonplace to you and me, this is obviously not the case for everyone.  President Obama seems intrinsically unable to say, for example, “The United States is better than X.”

The roots of the word “discrimination” mean “to draw a line.”  Decades of anti-discrimination rhetoric have made most people unwilling to draw the line against anything, from worthless bums to vicious criminals to illegal immigrants to those who would destroy the nation and replace it with the most repressive theocracy.

Some things are good, in relation to the life of human beings.  Some things are bad.  A Neo-Victorian is ready to say what is good, and bad, and make the effort to effect the good in the world, and minimize or eliminate the bad.

That is what I will be doing here.

(Mr.) Neo-Victorian

It’s on–strippers counter-protest church

Naturally, Smash Mouth readers will be interested in inspecting the strippers uniforms.  I personally think that they should shut the strip joint down just because the strippers are so skanky (which is best revealed by going to the link and watching the video–yikes, buttfuglier women I can’t remember ever seeing.)

Roger Huerta knocks out a street thug

For those of you us who enjoy street justice.  Ex-UFC fighter administers a little street justice to a thug who knocked out a woman.

John Doe

p.s.  Sadly, this made me think of a previous blog post that I read somewhere within the past month.  The gist of it was the blogger told of an occasion where he was present when a man was punching a woman and he did nothing, and asked the other men if they would have intervened.  To a man, all of them said that they would not.  They all seemed to be  of a younger generation, and their “rationalizations” varied from she probably deserved, the dude was already mad and probably holding back some but if you got involved he would stop holding back and freak out on you, all the way to she might join the fight against  you if you intervened.  I wish I remember where it was.
