My family believes that either somebody keeps breaking into our house or it is haunted

Scene one: A few months ago, my wife and neice came home at night to an empty house (I was playing poker–hey, it was Saturday night). Once inside, with the dogs and cat downstairs with them, they heard footsteps and a door close upstairs. They rushed outside, and sat in the car. Their futile attempts to pry me away from the card game convinced them to call my friend who came over with his handy .357 to sweep the house. Even he thought he heard something when he got there. My wife swears that she saw a black light flash in our bedroom window (our wireless internet connection could account for that). Spooked friend sweeps house, finds no evidence of intruder or of a way to enter house. I laughed at them and said they are all weenies.

Scene Two: Yesterday, in the afternoon, my 18 year old daughter was home alone. Suddenly she was standing at the top of our stairs and noticed that the light above her was on. Dogs and cat were accounted for. She didn’t turn it on, so she got a little spooked. Suddenly a clothes basket fell off the washer 6 feet from her. She scurries into my room and locks the door and calls me at work. For my little girl, I came home in 10 minutes. While I was en route she heard what she thought was a door close. I turned on our street and saw a stranger’s car with a guy sitting in it, but that was 2 blocks from our home. I get home and sweep the place with my .357. I must admit it makes the hair  on the back of my head stand up going into rooms and peering under beds and in closets when you think a bad guy might be waiting to jump you. Nobody found, all doors were locked and bolted from inside, but back window was unlatched and could have been means of egress and ingress. Later we learn of what transpired in Scene Three to our niece, who didn’t want to mention it.

Scene Three: Last Saturday niece was home alone during afternoon. She was upstairs when she heard kitchen cabinets open/close, and dishes in dishwasher rattle. She assumed we were back home, but looked out and saw no car. She went into bathroom and locked door until we returned, then felt too foolish to tell us.

One weird thing. A while back, I came home with wife and noticed a house key sticking up from behind our front light beside door, sorta half in and half out. Nobody who might have ever  had a key to our front door either remembers or admits to putting it there. We live in a neighborhood surrounded on all sides too close for comfort by other neighbors.  No evidence that anybody has ever taken anything or disturbed anything. No complaints from anyone else in neighborhood of unlawful entries. WTF is going on?

Now, none of my ladies want to stay home alone.  That’s the real problem. Is this all a plot to get me to give up playing poker into the wee hours of the night? Is our house haunted? Have we heard an unwanted visitor three times so far, but never seen him/her? Or are the girls just spooked and their is a logical explanation for each incident? Halp. I need explanations. Call me cornfused in Glen Allen.

  1. “Is this all a plot to get me to give up playing poker into the wee hours of the night?”

Yes. Buy them a .357 and tell them to put on their big girl pants.

  2. I have a great security system at my house. Three. Big. Dogs. Mean ones…

  3. Dude, as a man that has seen his grandfather WELL after his death ( Christmas Eve, 1965) ( I was born 9/12/66) I surely believe in the spiritual side of afterlife. I wake at the slightest sense of anything…I have been in 3 different fires (both work and home) so I am acutely aware of my surroundings. I see things before they happen…seriously.

Today when Barb and I were leaving Food Lion over near EMU, I slipped into a moment where I knew I needed to hold on. As we came closer to the entrance to EMRC, a man in a mini-van pulled full out infront of us. Snowing llike a bitch, ice covering the road, I knew we had trouble before Barb could see it. I hollared up and she saw the man before he saw us and we slowed just enough not to kill this idiot.

This is not the first, by far, and hopefully not the last. Did you ever feel the hands of GOD on you? I did, about 2 months ago and am thankful.

As for your ladies, take them and get them someplace safe (for them). Call people that you might know and ask them if they have connections. please do not just pass this off, they are probably REALLY scared and I worry about them.
BTW ~ the guns are useless…

  4. Frankie, yer scarin me. First, I believe everything you say, but the part about you worrying about them has me worried. I take it you mean by the guns are useless you don’t think it is a human intruder. What do you think it is then, and what are you worried about?

Christa, I HAVE a .357 and I’ve shown all of them how to use it, but I’m not sure how they would do in the clutch…

  5. Install a security system. They are relatively inexpensive for the peace of mind it will give you…and them. I personally don’t believe in no ghosts. Who ya gonna call?

  6. I have never experienced the paranormal but far too many people have reported too many weird things that I am officially open-minded about them. Heck, even the Bible talks about people coming back from the dead, I think it was in the OT where some guy (Saul?) spoke to some other dude who was dead (Samuel?). I’ll look it up and get you the cite.

  7. Here is a portion of 1st Samuel, chapter 28, from the New International Version:
3 Now Samuel was dead, and all Israel had mourned for him and buried him in his own town of Ramah. Saul had expelled the mediums and spiritists from the land.

4 The Philistines assembled and came and set up camp at Shunem, while Saul gathered all the Israelites and set up camp at Gilboa. 5 When Saul saw the Philistine army, he was afraid; terror filled his heart. 6 He inquired of the LORD, but the LORD did not answer him by dreams or Urim or prophets. 7 Saul then said to his attendants, “Find me a woman who is a medium, so I may go and inquire of her.”
“There is one in Endor,” they said.

8 So Saul disguised himself, putting on other clothes, and at night he and two men went to the woman. “Consult a spirit for me,” he said, “and bring up for me the one I name.”

9 But the woman said to him, “Surely you know what Saul has done. He has cut off the mediums and spiritists from the land. Why have you set a trap for my life to bring about my death?”

10 Saul swore to her by the LORD, “As surely as the LORD lives, you will not be punished for this.”

11 Then the woman asked, “Whom shall I bring up for you?”
    “Bring up Samuel,” he said.

12 When the woman saw Samuel, she cried out at the top of her voice and said to Saul, “Why have you deceived me? You are Saul!”

13 The king said to her, “Don’t be afraid. What do you see?”
The woman said, “I see a spirit [a] coming up out of the ground.”

14 “What does he look like?” he asked.
“An old man wearing a robe is coming up,” she said.
Then Saul knew it was Samuel, and he bowed down and prostrated himself with his face to the ground.

15 Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me by bringing me up?”
“I am in great distress,” Saul said. “The Philistines are fighting against me, and God has turned away from me. He no longer answers me, either by prophets or by dreams. So I have called on you to tell me what to do.”

16 Samuel said, “Why do you consult me, now that the LORD has turned away from you and become your enemy? 17 The LORD has done what he predicted through me. The LORD has torn the kingdom out of your hands and given it to one of your neighbors—to David. 18 Because you did not obey the LORD or carry out his fierce wrath against the Amalekites, the LORD has done this to you today. 19 The LORD will hand over both Israel and you to the Philistines, and tomorrow you and your sons will be with me. The LORD will also hand over the army of Israel to the Philistines.”

20 Immediately Saul fell full length on the ground, filled with fear because of Samuel’s words. His strength was gone, for he had eaten nothing all that day and night.

21 When the woman came to Saul and saw that he was greatly shaken, she said, “Look, your maidservant has obeyed you. I took my life in my hands and did what you told me to do. 22 Now please listen to your servant and let me give you some food so you may eat and have the strength to go on your way.”

Also, the New Testament clearly talks often about evil spirits. Jesus healed a young boy who was so filled with evil spirits that the boy would throw himself into the fire. He cast out many demons/evil spirits from the same man as described in Luke chapter 8, verse 26 and following:

26They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes,[b] which is across the lake from Galilee. 27When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice, “What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t torture me!” 29For Jesus had commanded the evil[c] spirit to come out of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the demon into solitary places.
30Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”

“Legion,” he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31And they begged him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.

32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them permission. 33When the demons came out of the man, they went into the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was drowned.

34When those tending the pigs saw what had happened, they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35and the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet, dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36Those who had seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37Then all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them, because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.

Sorry, not trying to turn this into a Bible study. While technically not “ghosts”, evil spirits/demons prolly ain’t something that you would want to mess around with. 😉 And Frankie is prolly correct that a .357 wouldn’t harm them. MEbbe if you had silver bullets?

  8. I once met a guy that was stationed on the USS Mossbrugger http://www.ussmoosbrugger.com/index.htm and when we would refuel their ship, they would send over a Silver Bullet for whoever was manning the pumps that particular day. I only got one and I lost that along the way.

Anyway, if you don’t think it is an intruder of physical nature, get a dog to make sure. If you might think it is of spiritual level, I suggest you can find a Chaser in the phone book who would be willing to come look at the house…or try a priest…they scare easily but they could provide a good service.

  9. Oh, John, this is just plain creepy. Wish I hadn’t read this right before bed. I’m with Christa on the big scary dogs.

  10. I had a long talk with all the girls last night. Told them we can’t keep moving just because they get spooked. They gotta buck up and be brave where ever they live. .357 and the dogs we have already will protect vs. humans, and God will protect them vs. non-humans. First test comes soon as daughter home alone for awhile again….

p.s. warning, bad guys, she is a good shot too!

  11. And Frankie, to be frank (he he), I never heard of a Chaser. Now I’m gonna have to google it.

  12. Hey John, this might be a place to start… http://www.rockingham-paranormal-society.com/ …hope something good comes out fo this.
