Recently Scott Brown was an obscure state Senator from a small New England state.  After his sensational upset victory, suddenly he is being touted as a presidential candidate in 2012, and he refuses to rule out such a bid.  But he sure is cute, and has a nice family, and he drives a truck!

Before that, Sarah Palin was an obscure governor from some obscure western state.
