I can’t speak for anybody else in the blog world Lowell but I’m not like Democrats, I want the country to prosper no matter who the president is. Nothing would make me happier than you being able to crow and rub in our faces that Obama turned this economy around. At this point, the stock market has been in freefall since before he came into office so right now if you can picture it, he’s trying to stop the boulder from rolling downhill after it has built up some no small momentum. Early signs seem to be pointing to investors beginning to have some cautious confidence in the measures being taken to stabilize the economy and convincing banks to begin loaning to those folks who have already qualified for loans and whose projects are languishing while waiting.
What we seem to be seeing is the old two steps forward and one step back, three steps forward and one step back etc… It seems (and is) painfully slow going right now as everyone is rightfully tentative and wary.
But to get back to the intent of your question, right now if Obama can not only slow the boulder, but is able to begin rolling it back up the hill, he deserves credit. The stairstep nature of the uphill roll is to be expected as market gains are made and harvested (profits taken).
But James, Obama will bear responsibility and be held as such if he doesn’t achieve a good beginning to a turnaround before the end of the year. Not necessarily my timetable, because I’ve been trying to warn folks of what just happened for most of this decade, and I understand that when we’ve spun the wheels until we’re up to the axial, it take a while to get dug out… But the expectations are that there is some way to make a quick fix, with a silver bullet type of solution, and that’s what folks will hold the administration, and the president, and the congress, to achieving.
Ultimately while not yet, this will become Obama’s baby. And it’s ultimately a baby he said he wanted to raise, so yes James, after just a bit more time to get the boulder rolling back up the hill, Obama will become responsible for keeping in going, or if it slips and rolls back down the hill right over top of him…
McCain may well have won, by losing the election. This thing is bigger than anyone I know can wrap their mind around. And I’m not sure anyone can. But, to use yet another metaphor, when we’re faced with a forest fire, we do what we can where we can to save what we can, and then we rebuild.
