Exit polls showed conservatives still out-number liberals, 34% to 22%. And that McCain did not get as much of the conservative vote (78%) as Obama did the liberal vote (88%). A valid conclusion would be that by moving to the center to get those great un-washed independent voters, McCain alienated his base and thus lost the election. Those fickle middle-of-the-roaders probably didn’t even support him. Look at so-called republicans seth and Dr. Aldrich as two infamous examples. Note to future Republican candidates: next time, secure the base, and expand outward.
